About my paintings

I don't have a fixed method of making a painting - a gain of liberty in exchange for a loss of order. With every new work that order has to be created. The uncertain and constantly changing relationship between the pictorial and the representation is the guiding factor: threequarters of what I paint means nothing; I paint it to be able to place the remaining quarter.
It is sometimes difficult to balance this relationship, in which case it is better to sacrifice the representation to the correctness of the image than vice versa. What remains is a painting that is the witness of its own realization.
The specific sequence of impulsive decisions oriented in the matter concerns the pictorial: the hand of the painter. Not much to say about it, it can only be enjoyed by looking at it.
It is different for the representation: the meanings and references belong to the realm of language. I rarely use figurative elements for their narrative character; sometimes they protect me from inconsistency or help me to reinforce the theatre of the elements.

Ik heb geen vaste methode om een schilderij te maken - een winst aan vrijheid in ruil voor een verlies aan orde. Met elk werk moet die orde opnieuw worden ontworpen en de wankele, zich steeds wijzigende verhouding tussen het picturale en de voorstelling is daarbij de leidraad: driekwart van wat ik schilder betekent niets, ik schilder het om het resterende kwart te kunnen plaatsen.
Het is soms moeilijk om in deze relatie een evenwicht te vinden; in dat geval is het beter om de voorstelling op te offeren aan de juistheid van het beeld dan andersom. Er rest dan een schilderij dat slechts getuigt van zijn eigen realisatie. De specifieke opeenvolging van impulsieve beslissingen georiënteerd op de materie betreft het schilderkunstige: de hand van de schilder. Er valt weinig over te zeggen, men kan er slechts kijkend van genieten.
Anders is het met de voorstelling: de betekenissen en hun verwijzingen behoren tot het domein van de taal. Ik gebruik maar zelden figuratieve elementen om hun narratieve karakter; soms beschermen ze me tegen onsamenhangendheid of helpen het theater van de elementen onderling te versterken.
